What to Include in Your First Trip: Top Croatia Holiday Destinations and Must-Do Things

If you’re wondering what the top Croatia holiday destinations and must-do things in Croatia are for a first trip, here’s what I recommend for a well-rounded experience:

  • A historic city: such as Dubrovnik or Split, packed with charm, culture, and sea views
  • At least one island: Hvar for nightlife, Korcula for wine, or Vis for peace and quiet.
  • A national park: for example, Plitvice or Krka for waterfalls, or Mljet for tranquil lakes and nature.
  • A bit of adventure: think kayaking, hiking, island hopping or a boat trip.
  • Local food and wine: try dishes like peka or black risotto, paired with Croatian wine or join a food tour for an immersive experience.

And remember. Aim to balance sightseeing with slow, easy moments (also known as fjaka, carry on reading to learn more!). Croatia’s magic often lies in those relaxed in-between hours.

Where to Go in Croatia: Holiday Destinations for First-Time Visitors

Enjoy a visit to Hvar Island, one of the top Croatia Destinations for first time visitors.
Enjoy a visit to Hvar Island, one of the top Croatia Destinations for first time visitors.

When it comes to choosing the best Croatia holiday destinations, it’s easy to feel indecisive. I understand, the country is packed with stunning places to visit!

If it’s your first time, you might want to focus on the big hitters: the iconic, postcard-worthy spots that most travellers dream of. These are the must-visit places in Croatia that live up to the hype, and while they can get busy, they’re popular for good reason.

Here’s a quick look at the classic stops that first-timers often include:

⭐ Dubrovnik

Yes, it’s touristy, but for good reason. Walk the ancient city walls in Dubrovnik, get lost in the marble-paved streets of the Old Town, and enjoy views of the Adriatic at every turn.

Dubrovnik is undeniably beautiful, though you don’t need to stay too long (especially in summer when the cruise crowds roll in).

My tip: Stay just outside the centre in places like Cavtat, Mlini or the Konavle region for a more relaxed base with easy access to the city.

⭐ Split

More than just a transport hub, Split is buzzing with life. Explore the Roman ruins of Diocletian’s Palace, sip coffee on the Riva promenade, or take a day trip to nearby Trogir, Klis Fortress, or the islands.

Split is a great blend of ancient and modern, with an easygoing Dalmatian vibe.

⭐ Plitvice Lakes National Park

One of Croatia’s most famous natural wonders, Plitvice Lakes National Park, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Expect turquoise lakes, wooden walkways, and waterfalls at every turn.

It’s best visited early in the day or off-season if you want to beat the crowds.

Tip: If you’re short on time, consider Krka as a more accessible (but also beautiful) alternative.

⭐ Krka Waterfalls

A popular day trip from Split or Sibenik, Krka National Park offers scenic boardwalk trails and beautiful cascades. You can no longer swim at Skradinski Buk, but the scenery is still worth the visit.

It’s an easier park to navigate than Plitvice and ideal if you’re staying on the coast.

⭐ Hvar

Known for glitz and glamour, Hvar Town is a hotspot for nightlife and yacht-spotting. But the island has a quieter side too, including inland villages, lavender fields in early summer, and hidden coves make it worth exploring beyond the main town.

Tip: Visit the nearby Pakleni Islands for swimming and snorkelling in postcard-perfect bays.

⭐ Korcula

Often called a “mini Dubrovnik,” Korcula is full of medieval beauty, minus the crowds. Add in local wine, hidden coves, and relaxed island life, and this makes it a perfect first-timer pick.

⭐ Rovinj

This colourful town on the Istrian coast feels more Italian than Croatian. Think cobbled streets, seafood dinners, and sunsets over the Adriatic.

It’s a lovely option if you’re flying into Pula or exploring Istria, with easy day trips to hilltop towns and vineyards.

⭐ Blue Cave (Bisevo)

This natural wonder is one of the most iconic sights in Croatia. Located off the island of Vis, the cave glows an unearthly blue as sunlight filters through the water.

It’s often visited on a speedboat day trip from Hvar, Vis, or Split — just be prepared for queues in peak season.

💡 Tip: Want a quieter trip? Base yourself just outside the main cities and explore from there. You’ll avoid the crowds, enjoy better value, and still be close to the action.

Croatia Beyond the Hotspots

As well as the popular destinations in Croatia there are also some wonderful less explored places such as Klis near Split.
Be sure to visit less explored places in Croatia such as Klis Fortress near Split

If you’re not one for crowds or just want a more relaxed, local feel, don’t worry. Croatia has plenty of lesser-known destinations that offer just as much charm as the big-name spots.

These are ideal if you’re visiting in peak season, or you’ve already ticked off the iconic sights and want to explore further.

Here are some under-the-radar Croatia holiday destinations worth adding to your list:

⭐ Cavtat, Mlini & Konavle (Near Dubrovnik)

Want to enjoy Dubrovnik without the crowds and cruise ships? Base yourself just outside the city.

  • Cavtat is a pretty seaside town with a palm-lined promenade, great restaurants, and easy boat connections to Dubrovnik.
  • Mlini offers peaceful beaches and a laid-back vibe just 15 minutes from the Old Town.
  • Konavle is characterised by rolling hills, traditional villages, and local cuisine, making it an ideal destination for wine tasting or a countryside escape.

⭐ Trogir (Near Split)

  • Trogir is a small, UNESCO-listed town with winding stone streets and a laid-back vibe. It is connected to Split by frequent buses or by boat (during the summer season).

⭐ Sibenik and Zadar

  • Sibenik is a coastal gem with a UNESCO-listed cathedral, two fortresses, and great access to Krka National Park.
  • Zadar offers Roman ruins, sea organs, magical sunsets and it’s a lively alternative to Split or Dubrovnik.

⭐ Zagreb

  • Zagreb, Croatia’s capital, is often skipped by beach-focused travellers, but it’s a great place to start or end your trip if you’re flying in/out. Think quirky museums, cafe culture, and a cool artsy vibe.

⭐ Lesser-Known Dalmatian Islands

Looking for something a little more off the radar?

  • Vis is remote and peaceful, with hidden coves and fascinating history.
  • Mljet is covered in a lush national park and is perfect for cycling and swimming.
  • Brac is home to the famous Zlatni Rat beach, but most of the island remains delightfully uncrowded.

⭐ Makarska & Omis

  • Makarska has a lovely seafront promenade backed by mountains. Ideal for families and beach time.
  • Omis, just south of Split, is a small town with a big adventure scene, including canyoning, ziplining, and rafting on the Cetina River.

🧭 Pro Tip: If you’re planning to return to Croatia (and trust me, you should!), don’t try to squeeze it all in. Tick off a few highlights now, and save lesser-known spots like inland Istria or the northern islands for next time.

Where to Go in Croatia: Best Regions

Croatia has many beautiful regions to explore. each offering something unique and special.
Choose to explore one or two regions in Croatia, such as Istria where you can visit the Pula amphitheatre

Croatia may look small on the map, but it packs in a lot of variety.

The best Croatia holiday destinations are spread across a handful of distinct regions. Here’s a quick overview to help you get your bearings:

Southern Dalmatia: Dubrovnik, Islands & Coastal Charm

This is where you’ll find Croatia’s most iconic sights, and it’s a great place to start your adventure.

  • Dubrovnik is the star, with its medieval Old Town, famous city walls, and sweeping sea views.
  • Take a boat trip to nearby Lokrum Island or the Elafiti Islands for a peaceful escape from the crowds.
  • Further south, you’ll find charming spots like Cavtat and the rugged Konavle countryside.

This region is a great base if you want sun, sea, and a strong dose of history.

Central Dalmatia: Split & Island-Hopping Base

Split is where history meets the beach, and along with Dubrovnik, it’s one of the best places to base yourself for exploring the Dalmatian coast.

  • The city’s heart is Diocletian’s Palace, a Roman ruin now packed with bars, boutiques, and cafes.
  • It’s also the jumping-off point for Croatia’s island hopping. Ferries and catamarans connect you to Hvar (for nightlife), Korcula (for wine), and Vis (for untouched nature).
  • Take a day trip to the nearby Krka National Park, known for its magnificent waterfalls and nature.

Central Dalmatia is a flexible region with good ferry and bus connections.

Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park is a UNESCO-listed showstopper and one of the most visited places in Croatia. It offers a complete change of scenery with lush forests, waterfalls, and wooden walkways.

It’s inland, so usually best done as a stopover between Zagreb and the coast or as a day trip from Zadar or Split. You can also stay nearby if you’d like more time exploring.

Istria: Wine, Food & Coastal Towns

Up in the northwest, Istria feels a little more Italian, and it’s a food and wine lover’s dream.

  • Explore coastal gems like Rovinj and Pula, or venture inland to hilltop villages like Motovun.
  • Sample local Malvasia wines, olive oil, and black truffles, which are some of the best in the country.

Istria is an ideal region if you love food, wine, and a more relaxed pace of travel.

Zagreb & Inland Charm

  • Often overlooked, Croatia’s capital is underrated and surprisingly cool. Zagreb is great entry/exit point with lots of flights, and the city centre is walkable and full of charm.
  • Samobor – A pretty town near Zagreb known for kremšnita (custard slice), hiking, and small-town charm
  • Varazdin – A baroque beauty in the north, perfect for a culture-rich day trip
  • Slavonia – Croatia’s eastern region, often overlooked but full of vineyards, rolling farmland, and authentic local traditions

Inland Croatia is ideal for road-trippers and travellers looking to dig a little deeper

💡 Tip: Short on time or relying on public transport? Stick to one or two regions. Got a rental car and a bit longer? You can easily combine the coast, islands, and inland sights into one epic trip.

Here are some must-see cultural landmarks:

    • Sibenik’s Cathedral of St. James
    • Stari Grad Plain on Hvar (for something unique)

Island Hopping in Croatia

One of the most famous things to do in Croatia? Get yourself out to the islands.

Each one has its own vibe — you really can’t go wrong:

  • Hvar: beach bars, chic towns, lavender fields (best visited early summer), and a buzzing nightlife scene

Time on the Water

With over 1,000 islands and a stunning coastline, getting on the water should be a non-negotiable.

You don’t need to charter a yacht (unless you want to!), even a day trip can be unforgettable.

  • Island hop by ferry: Split to Hvar, Korcula, or Vis is a classic route
  • Take a boat trip to the Blue Cave or the Pakleni Islands
  • Swim or snorkel at secluded spots like Stiniva Beach, Zlatni Rat, or hidden coves on Vis

Food & Wine Moments

Croatia is made for foodies. Every region has its own dishes, wine varieties, and food stories.

Slow down and savour the local flavours of Croatia:

  • Try traditional dishes such as peka (slow-cooked meat or octopus), black risotto, and fresh Adriatic seafood.
  • Taste Croatian wine in Pelješac (Plavac Mali reds), Istria (Malvasia and Teran), or the Dalmatian Islands (Grk, Pošip).
  • Visit a local market, eat at a family-run konoba, or join a food tour to sample regional specialities.
  • Go truffle hunting in Istria – join a guided walk through oak forests with trained dogs and finish with a truffle tasting (best in autumn, but available year-round).
  • Olive oil tasting in Istria or Dalmatia – visit a producer to learn how it’s made and taste the peppery, award-winning local oils straight from the source.

Nature & Adventure

Beyond the beaches, Croatia offers breathtaking landscapes and active adventures.

  • Hike or walk in Plitvice Lakes, Krka, or up Vidova Gora (for panoramic views over Brac)
  • Kayak around Dubrovnik’s city walls or through sea caves
  • Try rafting, canyoning, or ziplining on the Cetina River near Omis

Slow Down & Embrace the Local Rhythm

Croatians have a word for the art of doing nothing: fjaka. It’s that warm, lazy state where time slows down, and honestly, it’s a must-do in itself.

  • Enjoy long, lazy breakfasts and coffee breaks by the sea
  • Watch the sunset from a city wall, beach bar, or ferry deck
  • Wander side streets, chat with locals and take your time.

🧡 Don’t overschedule. Some of the best memories happen when you least expect them.

Yes — Croatia is very doable without a car, especially if you stick to the coast and islands. Buses and ferries connect major cities, islands, and attractions like Plitvice and Krka.
