Soak up the sun on one of Croatia’s beautiful beaches

When people ask me where they can swim, it’s a simple response. “Anywhere you can see the sea! ”

With its stunning coastline and idyllic beaches, Croatia is a sun-seekers paradise. Whether you prefer secluded coves or lively resorts, Croatia offers a beach experience to suit every taste.

Again I’d be writing another novel if I started listing all the incredible beaches in Croatia! And I’m pretty sure I’d be using the descriptive terms ‘stunning’ and ‘crystal clear waters’ all the time! So instead I’m going to share some Croatia beach tips with you.

Croatian Beach Tips

🏖️ Many beaches in Croatia have pebble or rocky shores, so wearing swimming shoes or sandals with good grip can provide added comfort and protection while walking on the beach and entering the water. Additionally, some areas may have sea urchins, especially in rocky areas, so wearing protective footwear can help prevent accidental spikes! Order your swimming shoes here.

🏖️ While many beaches in Croatia offer stunning natural beauty, not all of them have extensive facilities such as restrooms, showers, or food and beverage vendors. Before heading to the beach, consider bringing along essentials such as water, snacks, towels, and any other items you may need for a comfortable day by the sea. Order your trusty backpack to carry everything in here.

🏖️ Naturist beaches are popular in Croatia. The majority are marked with an ‘FKK’ which is a German phrase, “Frei-Körper-Kultur,” meaning free body culture. Good to know in case you stumble upon a beach and wonder why people are stripping off!

Every location by the coast has incredible beaches so be sure to seek them out.

Best things to do in Croatia - Embrace the Croatian Coffee
Join locals for coffee in Croatia and sit back and enjoy the views

When we tell friends and family living in the UK, that we regularly go out for coffee, they wonder why we don’t just have coffee at home. Learning how to say ‘Shall we go for coffee’ is one of the first things we learnt to say in Croatian!

Coffee culture is an integral part of Croatian daily life. Join locals in their daily ritual of coffee drinking and enjoy the laid-back ambience of Croatian cafes.

A few tips about coffee drinking in Croatia: coffee is typically served in small quantities, no Starbucks bucket-sized cups are available. The milk is sometimes served cold, so if you like your coffee hot, ask for warm milk (in Croatian ask ‘s toplom mljekom’ ).

Until recently it wasn’t possible to find Take-A-Way coffee. This is changing, but if you want to do it the authentic Croatian way, sit, pause and enjoy your coffee at the cafe.

Get off the beaten track and visit less explored places in Croatia
Get off the beaten track and explore less touristy places in Croatia, such as the Peljesac Peninsula

I get it. You’re planning a visit to Croatia and have been told about all the places you MUST visit. But keep in mind, all those must-visit places in Croatia, are being visited by many other people, and in time those locations adapt to serve the needs of visitors. So yes, they can get a bit touristy.

I’m not discouraging you from visiting these places, but my advice is to include some less-known spots in Croatia as well. The places that represent the very true Croatia.

Perhaps include a visit to the Peljesac Peninsula, famous for its stunning vineyards and fresh oysters; explore historic cities such as Osijek and Vukovar in Slavonia; or island hop around the Kvarner Islands including Cres, Lošinj and Rab.
